Such a long and winded story. So many scenes that don't really matter. And then it ended so fast in the last 20 pages or so. Most of the book is a narration rather than a conversation. And then of course you have repetitive love scenes that go on for pages. And yet the actual drama and suspense is never actually fleshed out.

*** some spoilers ***

Typical of an SL novel, you have a hero who is inexplicably drawn to the heroine but could never tell her he loves her... Not until a life and death situation. Of course, that's the only way you will know you love somebody... When their lives are in danger.

Then after so many pages of trivia and introspection both for H and h, the traitor is conveniently unmasked by kidnapping h thereby revealing his identity. Really? A spy who has hidden his identity for years now decides to reveal himself? After callously killing people left and right during his time as a traitor, he decides to use rape and torture to exact his revenge while within a mile of the hero. H had already stopped looking for him, basically the traitor has gotten off scot free, so now he decides it's time for a revelation? Ugh. What a stupid scenario.

Compared to other SL novels, this book really falls short. I wouldn't recommend this book if it was half the price. Seriously, unless you just want closure since this is the last book of a series, this is so NOT worth it.

I like the story and the characters. The graphic sex scenes make me give it a 3.

Anyone who thinks that graphic sex scenes are necessary in a romance should read Faro's Daughter by Georgette Heyer. You will absolutely believe that the H and h are passionately in love with each other by the end of the book.
After building and building the mystery behind the famous "Dalziel", the mastermind of the Bastion Club, this novel was anti-climactic in my opinion. Without revealing too much of the story, the arch-nemesis is too obvious to be missed by a character who has been described over the series as being meticulous in his action plans and has been lauded in the past for his attention to detail. I don't think it would have come this far for him to not know "who" the last traitor could be. After going into retirement and no longer focusing so much energy on a specific war stratagem, you'd think this type of character would find it hard to just "let it go". There should have been some kind of transition while simultaneously allowing his new lady love to partner with him in figuring out "who" the last traitor was and what they were going to do about it. The balance between being the Male over-protective hero and the Heroine's independence is one of the things I've enjoyed in reading previous Laurens novels. Rarely was any of this common byplay between the 2 main characters apart of this story.

Stephanie Laurens will continue to be one of my favored authors to read. However, this book in my opinion, was not one of her best. Fair Juno will remain my favorite read of Laurens.
This was the last of the Bastion series. Ms. Laurens did such an amazing job in the storyline with intrigue, adventure, love, mystery - what more could we ask for? The end for the traitor was very apt. I couldn't put the book down until I was finished. Minerva & Royce were awesome characters along with all of the rest!
Mastered By Love (Bastion Club) is one of my favorite historical romances by Stephanie Laurens. Her books are great stories with plenty of sweet romance and sex. There are eight stories of eight men in the Bastion Club. Plus Captain Jack's Woman is recommended since Captain Jack helps out in several stories. The gentlemen of the Bastion Club have proven their courage while fighting England's enemies, but nothing has prepared them for dealing with that most formidable of challenges the opposite sex.
The men of the Bastion Club are powerful, loyal, and not averse to overcoming danger if they must. Now, after years of loyal service to the Crown, they each -- one by one -- must face that greatest danger of all ...love. Meet Royce “Dalziel” Varisey, 10th Duke of Wolverstone and Minerva Chesterton on their quest for love and marriage. This is the last book of the Bastion Club but Royce and Minerva are main characters in Laurens’ stories and are in many of her books.
I already had in Paperback and decided to get in also for more convenience.
MASTERED BY LOVE is the eighth and final book in the Bastion Club series. It is the story of the mysterious leader Dalziel. Having seen all his men married, Dalziel is ready to return to his life as Royce Varisey when he gets a message that his father had died and Royce is now the Duke of Wolverstone. Royce must now marry but the women of the ton don't interest him. Instead, he is intrigued by the castle's chatelaine Minervi a Chesterton.

I loved the story of Royce and Minerva. The two knew each other years ago and she has always been ready to fall in love with him. Royce is struggling to find his way post Dalziel and trying to reconcile the life he had lived for sixteen years with his role of Duke. This book was different from the other books of the Bastion Club series. While Minerva was a strong woman and initially against the idea of marriage, she just wanted to be loved. I really appreciated how Royce acknowledges and respects her intellect and experience with the estate and world toward a partnership with Minerva.

I love books with strong, intelligent characters who don't do stupid things.

This book also resolves the ongoing traitor plot. I was happy that the mystery plot was less predominant here allowing the reader to get to know Minerva and Royce better. Readers of the series already know plenty about the final traitor, I was happy that we didn't get a rehash of the prior books.

This was my favorite of the series because I loved the characters and felt that this wrapped up the series nicely.
