A history of environmental activism on Alabama's Gulf Coast from 1970 to the current day.

One day we might each face a Goliath in our lives and it’s important to realize a David resides in all of us. In the 1970’s, while Myrt Jones was still a fledging environmentalist, she squared off against her first Goliath Mobil Oil. Mobil had applied for a permit to drill in her beloved Mobile Bay and she wasn’t having it. Armed with tenacity, knowledge and fearlessness, Myrt, along with others, delayed Mobil’s permit for eight years! Defeating Mobil Oil was her first victory and fueled a determination to take on all comers who threatened the health and well-being of ALL the inhabitants in her beloved Alabama’s Gulf Coast.

Myrt quickly learned the power of one is remarkable, but the power of many can be awe-inspiring. She wrote Chronicle of an Eco Warrior in order to share her invaluable experiences as an environmental activist with the fervent hope she can inspire others to stand up and fight for what they believe in.

At the age of 87, Myrt Jones looks back at her passionate life-long journey of environmental advocacy along coastal Alabama. In the first part of the book, she relates her participation in many activities on behalf of environmental conservation. In the later part of the book, she shares her life in a "nutshell". I actually read her life story first. I especially enjoyed her personal stories relating her love of nature which helped me understand the need for its protection.
As Myrt states in her book, " I had a full life as wife, mother, and nurse. Yet, my passion for the protection of the environment led me to attend meetings; serve on committees and boards; hold press conferences; give interviews; attend workshops all over the US; and even travel to Germany." The "Goliaths" of oil, gas , coal, and shipping are quick to focus on dollar impact when selling a project to an area. Myrt challenged their view with accurate research and broadened the scope of the dialogue to include the true environmental impact of special projects.
Myrt's life story provides hope that one person can make a difference on behalf of the natural world. She truly earned Congressman Jo Bonner's designation as "the grandmother of environmental stewardship in South Alabama".

Chronicle of an EcoWarrior Relating South Alabama Environmental Issues Myrt Jones Reviews

Wonderful! A fascinating look at environmental activism in the deep south for the past 50 years. Informative and inspirational, Chronicle of an Eco Warrior is full of examples of how to find effective solutions to environmental issues. A must read for anyone who wants to become involved in current-day issues!
Although this book needed a bit more editing, it was thoroughly enjoyable and interesting. As an avid environmentalist myself, much of the documented environmental text was very revealing, as she mentions names and projects. As a former Corps of Engineer employee, I worked on many of the projects that she fought to stop, such as the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. But Myrt Jones, fearless and relentless against polluters and unwise development, has done a huge service for the people of Alabama. She held off the drilling in Mobile Bay for eight years until her environmental regulations were adopted. No one knew at the time whether Exxon-Mobil would find oil or gas or just dry holes. I am glad it was gas and not oil! Decades ago, I called Myrt and told her about a pitcher plant bog that I kept noticing along the road near my cabin. Thanks to her, the land has been preserved for all to see.
